About

The Sage Tomato combines my great passion for gardening with my love of teaching. The Sage Tomato started as an educational blog and newsletter full of wisdom and tidbits on seed starting, growing organic vegetables and herbs, and effectively harvesting for medicinal and edible purposes. I shared my expertise with friends on social media, and with customers at the garden centers where I cultivated my knowledge. My reputation as an experienced and trustworthy gardener blossomed over the years and soon my audience started asking for private consultations, garden designs, and classes.

Now, I am a Master Gardener Emeritus, a certified professional horticulturalist, a LEAD Maryland Fellow, and a Community Herbalist. I have worked in several well-known retail garden centers since 2007 and have obtained the knowledge to be a successful consultant. I have taught gardening, and specifically vegetable and herb gardening, through the University of Maryland Extension as a consultant in the Home and Garden Information Center answering questions for homeowners, farmers, and those in the horticultural industry. I have taught continuing education and lifelong learning courses at Anne Arundel Community College, at various garden centers, and for garden clubs and other organizations.

I am especially proud of to have established and maintained the kitchen garden at the Governor’s mansion in the state of Maryland. Under my supervision, this garden was used to feed the governor and his family, as well as guests and dignitaries. I also used it as an example and as a teaching tool for the community, as well as for visiting dignitaries and policy makers, to make kitchen gardens more accessible in urban areas like Annapolis City.

My dream is to use The Sage Tomato as a platform for teaching others how to improve their lives through gardening. The company name is a play on words. Sage and tomato both illustrate the gardening concept, while sage also represents the wisdom and sage advice I have to offer.
